Sharing The Spirit

Five singers from LA Opera’s Education and Community Outreach programs kicked off their two-day tour performing for patients in several local hospitals on Wednesday at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). The singers performed holiday classics for more than 20 assembled patients, family members and hospital staff in the hospital’s inpatient rehabilitation unit, which had been turned into a winter wonderland, complete with a holiday tree and light poles wrapped like candy canes. Patients of all ages, including those who couldn’t join but peeked out from their rooms, sang along to holiday classics like Little Drummer Boy and Here Comes Santa Claus. The performers took requests, including Twelve Days of Christmas and Silent Night and even took time out to sing Happy Birthday to a patient celebrating her 12th birthday. The performers—who came dressed in Christmas cheer, complete with Santa hats—included, from left, soprano Karen Hogle-Brown, baritone LeRoy Villanueva, baritone Eli Villanueva, tenor Ashley Faatoalia and mezzo-soprano Sara Campbell (not pictured). Joining the quintet of professional singers were LA Opera’s Director of Education and Community Outreach Stacy Brightman and staffers Jennifer Babcock and Jacob Shideler (right). Now in its 26th Season, LA Opera is the fourth largest opera company in the U.S. Throughout every season, LA Opera collaborates with numerous community centers, libraries, schools, and faith-based organizations to engage and serve its rich and diverse community. Each month, it offers scores of free talks, recitals and programs in neighborhoods throughout LA County. Last year, the company’s education and community outreach programs were experienced by more than 107,000 students and community members from a variety of backgrounds, many of them seeing and hearing opera for the very first time.<br>
