"Safe house" Tops President's Day Weekend Box Office

Denzel Washington's CIA thriller "Safe House" made a surprising jump to the top spot at the North American box office over the extended holiday weekend, unseating the romance "The Vow," according to final figures released today.

"Safe House" earned $27.5 million between Friday and Monday to improve on last weekend's second-place finish, according to Hollywood.Com Box-Office. "The Vow" was a close second with $26.6 million.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" held firm in third place with $25.9 million over the holiday weekend, while the sequel "Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance" debuted in fourth place with $25.5 million. The romantic comedy/action film "This Means War" earned $20 million in its debut to take fifth place.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the holiday weekend were "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace 3-D" ($9.9 million); "Chronicle" ($9.2 million); "The Secret World Of Arrietty" ($8.7 million); "The Woman In Black" ($7.8 million); and "The Grey" ($3.7 million).
