The two-hour premiere of the ABC paranormal thriller "The River" was a distant second in its 9-11 p.m. time slot behind CBS' "NCIS: Los Angeles" and "Unforgettable" while the 200th episode of CBS' "NCIS" was Tuesday's most-watched prime-time program, averaging 20.98 million viewers.

"The River" averaged 7.59 million viewers, according to live-plus-same- day figures released today by The Nielsen Co. Viewership dropped each half hour. The opening half-hour averaged 8.82 million, the second 7.88 million, the third 7.15 and the fourth 6.51 million.

However, "The River" was the most-watched program from 10-11 p.m. among viewers ages 18-49, the group ABC, Fox and NBC target and advertisers covet because it watches less television and is harder to reach.

Ratings for premieres are often unrepresentative of how the series will fare because of the heavy promotion they receive and viewers who tune in who are interested in the concept, but do not return for future episodes.

Opposite "The River" ""NCIS: Los Angeles" averaged 16.27 million viewers and "Unforgettable" 11.86 million.

CBS was the night's most-watched network, averaging 16.37 million viewers, winning every half hour, averaging at least 11.62 million viewers each half hour.

ABC was second, averaging 7.69 million viewers. It also aired two first- runs episode of the comedy "Last Man Standing" with the first averaging 7.78 million viewers from 8-8:30 p.m. and the second 8.02 million viewers from 8:30- 9 p.m.

Fox was third, averaging 6.75 million viewers for "Glee" (7.81 million), "New Girl" (6.83 million) and "Raising Hope" (4.47 million).

NBC was fourth, averaging 5.82 million viewers for a two-hour episode of "The Biggest Loser" (6.41 million) and the drama "Parenthood" (4.63 million).

CBS also led among viewers ages 18-49, 25-54 and 50 and older, a group it has long dominated. Fox led among viewers ages 12-17 and 18-34.

ABC, CBS and NBC all aired three hours of prime-time programming and Fox and The CW two hours each.

The MTV documentary series "Teen Mom" was the night's most-watched cable program, averaging 4.09 million viewers.
