A 3-D vampire movie and a tale recounting the heroics of the Tuskegee Airmen delivered a one-two opening punch at the North American box offices this weekend, studios reported today.
"Underworld Awakening" opened with a $25.2 million weekend gate, according to estimates from Sony/Screen Gems. Fifteen percent of that business was at IMAX theaters, Hollywood.com reported.
"Red Tails" opened with a $19.1 million take, and that was "a stronger than expected debut," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergerabedian. In third place was "Contraband," which was on track for a $12.2 million weekend and a two-week run of $46.1 million. The fourth place movie this weekend was "Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close," which went into wide release this weekend for the first time. It grossed $10.5 million this weekend, and has grossed $11.2 million in the five weeks since its soft launch.
Making up the remaining 10 most-popular movies in the United States and Canada, as estimated by the studios and collated by Hollywood.com, are "Haywire" (debuting at $9 million), "Beauty And The Beast" ($8.6 million), "Joyful Noise" ($6 million), "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" ($5.5 million), "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" ($4.8 million), and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" ($3.8 million).
