The estate of actor Peter Falk, best known for his lead role in "Columbo," donated $3 million to UCLA to provide scholarships for students who are studying music, have disabilities or are military veterans, the university announced today.

Falk died June 23 at age 83.

According to UCLA, the money will be used to establish the Shera and Peter Falk Lt. Columbo Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund will provide scholarships to at least five undergraduates this fall, covering tuition for four years.

"Peter cared deeply about making a difference and giving back to the community," Falk's wife, Shera, said. "What better legacy than to help students get a great education that will serve them throughout their lives, from a university so close to home."

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said, "This kind of support is essential to a top campus priority -- ensuring access for the best and brightest students during challenging economic times."

Falk earned 12 Emmy nominations during his career, winning four for his portrayal of Columbo -- with his trademark phrase, "Just one more thing ..." - - and one for a lead role in an episode of "The Dick Powell Theatre." He received two Oscar nominations for supporting roles in "Pocketful of Miracles" and "Murder, Inc."
