Dr. Edna Ma of Beverly Hills, an anesthesiologist at St. John’s Health Center, has launched a garment-based prep kit called BareEase & Cream for painless bikini area laser and waxing hair removal procedures.

As a young female, Dr. Ma had been through countless painful and unpleasant waxing procedures. As a pain management expert, she couldn’t understand why no over-the-counter products existed to alleviate the pain associated with it. Her product numbs the affected area and removes the additional pain associated with the heat from both hot wax and lasers.

Dr. Ma still recalls her own first waxing experience. “It was wholly unpleasant. I was on my hands and knees being poked and prodded while hot wax was applied to my sensitive skin and ripped away. Every tear brought additional discomfort and anxiety. I quickly discovered that I was among a rather large group of women whose threshold for pain isn’t exactly fantastic.” The experience was relatively traumatic for Ma and she was reluctant to continue to undergo waxing procedures because of the anticipation of unnecessary pain.

This resulted in her BareEase & Cream. Its prep kit consists of a Lidocaine-based cream, (the most widely used anesthetic), and additional ingredients including aloe and jojoba, which soothe and moisturize skin. Combined with the latex panty, the occlusive properties segregate the medication from ambient air, allowing for maximum absorption of the numbing cream into the designated area when used 30 – 45 minutes prior to any procedure. Used together, the cream and panty can be worn under clothing. They are removed just prior to waxing or laser hair removal, as the numbing properties will last for approximately 15 minutes once the cream is removed.
