The new school year is upon us. With the transition from summer to fall and beach bags to backpacks, also comes a new maturity for many kids. As they advance in grades, wardrobes need updating and school supplies need purchasing, but what about their most treasured space of all–their room? Shouldn’t the new school year also be reflected in their room décor? Yes, says Tara Riceberg of Tweak, an expert in style injections for any house.
“If you go back to your childhood, your room was a safe haven where you could relax,” said Riceberg.
“It is their space to express themselves. Your home should tell the story of whom you are, but their room should do that for them.”
According to Riceberg, it’s quick and easy to update a child’s room to reflect the place they are in life. A new duvet can transform a sweet middle school décor into a modern high school look. Rearranging the furniture can provide more space for homework and projects while also energizing the room.
New paint can enliven a room completely, giving it a whole new look.
“I like doing major fixes that are going to last a long time,” said Riceberg.
Her suggestion is to follow a “five-year plan” that will take your child from one stage in life to another appropriately.
“Ask yourself: ‘What will work for my ninth grader and then my college freshman who only comes home 10 weeks a year?’” said Riceberg.
Simple changes such as new throw pillows, buying new sheets or purchasing new towels can revive an old space quickly without going broke.
Another quick fix Riceberg suggests: wall appliqués.
“They can be constantly moved and won’t harm your walls or paint,” she said.
The bottom line?
“What works best for your kids is just to de-clutter their space,” said Riceberg.
