Nestled in an office space above North Canon Drive, lies a treasure trove filled with vintage baubles and jewels. Inside V Vintage, you will find storied costume pieces from all of the leading labels such as Chanel, Gucci, Lanvin, Christian Dior, Cadoro, Judith Lieber, Goldette, Bottega Veneta and more, all tucked inside the quaint interior.
“It’s like you are shopping in someone’s closet,” said owner Jill Garland. She shares the business with her mother-in-law, Paula. “I encourage people to try stuff on. I want them to be happy with what they buy.”
Garland has a long history in the world of accessories, working for several years on the floor of Barney’s. Long before, however, Garland was a true fan of all things vintage, scouring all over for to-die-for pieces. Her outfits (from what I have seen) have been impeccably styled, often with her own sought-after pieces.
V Vintage finds take Garland from Los Angeles to San Francisco to New York, hunting for costume pieces that are special, even better if they are authenticated. But it’s her spot-on taste that is the true star. “I obviously have to like each piece. That’s my first criteria,” she said. “Most of the time I buy things on the way they look, then if they are signed or stamped, that’s great.”
From my vantage point, I can see a 1960s Dior necklace, a pair of gold plated Chanel earrings, a fabulous Gucci belt and a cabinet lined with perfect Judith Lieber clutches.
Belts and bags have become a mainstay at V Vintage, but you’ll usually only find clutches in the ever-rotating collection because, as Garland says, “they’re just more special.”
Vintage shopping can be taxing, but when you find that ultimate piece, it’s a prize. V Vintage takes all the mulling through countless racks and bins out of the equation and places them all in one neat and tidy space. Garland goes through pains to edit her collection to make for ease of shopping. You are guaranteed to find something special.
“What I love is that anyone can wear my stuff. Anyone any age or any size can wear jewelry, a bag or a belt,” Garland said, herself draped in fabulous accessories no doubt found on one of her many jewelry hunting trips. This fall she hopes to expand her collection with trips to Philadelphia, New York and Chicago.
V Vintage prices it’s pieces at an unbeatable price point. A pair of stud earrings adorned with rhinestones I covet is priced at just $50. “It’s costume jewelry, that’s why this stuff is more affordable,” Garland said. “It’s faux. But you know most of the time no one will have it.” She does have pieces that are sterling silver and gold plated, however, they just may run a little higher in cost. But don’t let the lack of precious stones fool you – her pieces are every as bit high-end and special as the next Tiffany or Cartier bauble. Stars such as Kerry Washington have already been spotted wearing V Vintage finds – to the Whitehouse Correspondent’s Dinner, nonetheless.
But PR is not a V Vintage priority. Gossip about the hot finds has been spread via word of mouth, a marketing tool that has only helped to enhance the store. “You feel special, like it’s your own special find,” said Garland.
You can find V Vintage at 472 N. Canon Dr., Suite 216. The store is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m to 3 p.m., Saturdays by appointment only.
