So often children’s rooms are styled on the fly. They are often just a temporary space, waiting to usher the youngster from babyhood into childhood in pastel-washed rooms adorned with kitschy, sometimes tacky, usually child-like design. But who declared this? Who says your child’s room is impermanent? And who says this room can’t transition seamlessly from one era to another with effortless class and design? Certainly not Gail Sedigh of Art For Kids, the most recent addition to the Beverly Hills high-end, fine design scene.
Renowned for its classically styled, bench-made furniture, AFK launched its first flagship boutique in Beverly Hills in June. An official opening is scheduled for September.
The boutique showcases AFK’s hand-painted, solid-wood furniture, painstakingly detailed and customized with designer finishes. Features such as dovetailed drawers, under-mounted glides and beautiful hardware set AFK above the competition.
“We are a full-service store,” said Sedigh in the impeccably styled showroom, housed in a meticulously renovated, French Normandy-style building, formerly home to Peter Kadlac Furriers. “This is not a baby store. We are much more design-oriented. We’re not for everyone and we know that. We’re for a discriminating client that wants to indulge.”
Each piece Sedigh and AFK designs prominently displays intricate paints and trims (each chosen by Sedigh herself), elegant lines, a soft palette and exquisite detail. Since each piece is made-to-order, options for customizing finishes and design are limitless.
The furniture AFK manufactures is absolutely able to see your child throughout childhood and into adolescence as well. Bed frames, for instance, can be customized to accommodate a king-size mattress. “When it comes to fine classic furniture that can transition to adult furniture, we’re it,” said Sedigh.
AFK was born from Sedigh’s artwork. While pregnant with her first child in 1982, she began making alphabet nursery art (first featured at Beverly Hills’ bi-annual Affaire in the Gardens) that was quickly adopted by fine children’s retailers across the country. From there, the business expanded to include accessories and later furniture, all of which is manufactured in Orange County.
A baby registry program is to come, fully rounding out the services AFK can provide.
AFK is at 8634 Wilshire Blvd.
