With rates of childhood obesity tripling in the last 25 years, a continuing battle, it seems, is what to feed our children. With the availability of so many processed, pre-packaged foods at their disposal both at school and home, it is hard to monitor what our children are eating. Couple that with the never-ending lack of time adults face which further makes preparing a wholesome meal a tougher goal to achieve than ever.

Thankfully there are alternatives to the sugar-laden, nutrient-lacking foods on the shelves. Companies such as Revolution Foods are capitalizing on the lack of availability of such wholesome, organic options and providing parents a way to rest assured that their child is receiving the maximum benefit from their food.

Founders Kristin Groos Richmond and Kirsten Saenz Tobey started Revolution Foods in 2006 with the belief that every child deserves a great meal that will allow them to stay energized and focused during school. Firm believers that good eating habits need to being early, the duo, who met in business school but of whose background is in education, knew first-hand what was being offered to students in cafeterias and saw vast potential for improvement.

“From the beginning we have had the mission to make healthy meals accessible to all students,” said Tobey. “We have branched out to all schools – public, private and preschools – but always with the mission in mind that we serve healthy foods to all kids.”

What Tobey and Richmond created is a full-service hot lunch program that caters to schoolchildren. They currently serve over 35,000 fresh meals a day throughout Los Angeles, San Diego and the Bay Area, with expansion plans in the works.

But Tobey and Richmond did not stop there. They have partnered with Whole Foods to provide a complete product range of nutritious, easy lunch staples.

“The ultimate goal was to create a range of options for parents who are packing their lunches at home,” said Tobey.

Each USDA certified organic product, from the Jammy Sammy (a snack size twist on the lunchbox favorite) to the popular Mashups (organic fruit purees that can be eaten right from the squeezable pouch), contain recognizable whole foods that are minimally processed and designed by their chef from scratch. Perhaps one of their top selling products are the PopAlongs – an all-natural whole grain chip that is popped, not fried, to maintain the integrity of the grain.

“These lunchbox favorites are easy to pack solutions for parents who pack lunches at home,” said Tobey. Even better still: three percent of all purchases help to fund the Revolution Foods school lunch programs for low income schools.
