When the Briseno family of Ontario won tickets to sit behind the third- base dugout at a Dodger game, they were ecstatic – especially 3-year-old Janelle.
Unfortunately for the family of avid Dodger fans, their outing to the baseball game last month took a nearly tragic turn when Janelle was struck in the head by a line drive during batting practice, knocking her unconscious.
“I didn’t know what to do,” said Jose Briseno, the father of the young girl. “Everyone kept saying go to the first aid station. They laid her down and called the ambulance. They brought us here to Childrens Hospital and, now after surgery, I thank god that my daughter is fine.”
She was rushed to the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) Emergency Department and underwent surgery the following morning to repair her fractured skull.
“The surgery went well and we anticipate a full recovery,” said Dr. J. Gordon McComb, CHLA head of the division of neurosurgery.
The youngster was awake and watching cartoons in her hospital bed just hours after the surgery. She went home to her family just three days later
Before she departed, team officials from the Dodger organization came by to visit, bring her toys and gave game tickets to the entire hospital team responsible for her care.
The Briseno family joined the hospital team when they all attended a Dodger game Wednesday.
The player who hit Janelle with the baseball—Dodger catcher Russell Martin—felt “terrible” about the accident. Martin presented a smiling Janelle with a youth-sized Dodgers jersey with her name on the back at the game.
Her favorite player, Manny Ramirez, watched the game with the Briseno family and friends in the “Mannywood” section of the stadium. Ramirez is injured and currently is not available to play.
