An inert hand grenade found today in a parking structure at the Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach was safely removed by a bomb squad, police said.
Security officers called police about 7:30 a.m. and notified them that the grenade was on the second floor of the parking garage between Bloomingdales and Nordstrom, said Newport Beach police Sgt. Steve Burdette.
An Orange County sheriff's bomb squad removed the item, and the area was declared safe about 9 a.m., Burdette said.
