NBC's Sunday Night Football game between the Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers was both the week's most-watched prime-time program and the most-watched Week 2 preseason game in eight years.
The 49ers' 15-10 victory averaged 10.82 million viewers, the most for a Week 2 preseason game since ABC's coverage of a Denver Broncos-49ers game on Aug. 19, 2002, averaged 11.3 million viewers.
"Sunday Night Football' was also the week's most-watched program among viewers ages 18-49, the group ABC and Fox Broadcasting also target and advertisers covet.
But it was CBS -- with 13 of the 14 most-watched scripted programs among the five major broadcast networks and ``Big Brother' drawing season highs twice -- that was the most-watched network for the ninth consecutive week.
CBS averaging 6.09 million viewers for its prime-time programming between Aug. 16 and Sunday, according to live-plus-same-day figures released today by The Nielsen Co.
"NCIS' was the most-watched scripted program of the week, averaging 8.79 million viewers to finish fifth overall.
Although it competed against "Sunday Night Football,' the Sunday episode of "Big Brother' was 10th for the week, averaging 7.73 million viewers, the series' high for any night this season.
The Thursday episode was 13th for the week, averaging 7.55 million viewers, the season high for a Thursday episode.
NBC was second, averaging 5.70 million viewers, bolstered by the customary summer success of "America's Got Talent.'
The Wednesday "Talent' episode was second for the week, averaging 10.3 million viewers, the 11th time in the 12 weeks the series has aired this summer that one of its episodes was the week's most-watched non-sports program.
Only the season finale of "The Bachelorette' interrupted that streak.
The Tuesday episode was third for the week, averaging 10.19 million viewers.
Other than "Sunday Night Football,' the eight-minute pregame show and the two "Talent' episodes, NBC's most-watched program was the Wednesday edition of "Minute to Win It,' 23rd overall, averaging 5.65 million viewers.
ABC was third for the week, averaging 5.04 million viewers. Its most-watched program was the Tuesday edition of "Wipeout,' which was fourth overall, averaging 8.98 million viewers.
Viewership for the second edition of "Bachelor Pad' dropped 14 percent from its premiere a week earlier to 5.46 million, putting it 26th for the week, nine spots lower than a week before.
It won its Monday 8-10 p.m. time period among women ages 18-49 for the second consecutive week.
Viewership for nearly all programs drops from their first episode to its second.
Fox was fourth for the week, averaging 4.62 million viewers, but was first among viewers ages 18-49, 12-17 and 18-34, thanks mainly to showing two NFL preseason games.
NBC was first among viewers ages 25-54, while CBS led among viewers ages 55 and older.
(For ratings purposes, ABC, CBS and NBC all aired 22 hours of prime-time programming and Fox 16 hours, 55 minutes.)
TNT had cable's two most-watched programs for the second consecutive week, but ``The Closer' topped ``Rizzoli & Isles' with 6.82 million viewers, which would have put it 16th among the week's prime-time programs on the five major broadcast networks. ``Rizzoli & Isles' was second, averaging 6.49 million viewers, a week after finishing first.
The first-run dramas ``Burn Notice,' ``Covert Affairs' and ``Royal Pains' and the professional wrestling program ``WWE Raw' helped make USA the most-watched cable network in prime time for the 12th consecutive week, averaging 3.25 million viewers.
As usual, Univision was the most-watched Spanish-language network, averaging 3.63 million viewers for its prime-time programming.
Telemundo was second, averaging 810,000 viewers, followed by TeleFutura, which averaged 700,000, Azteca America, which averaged 190,000 and Estrella TV, which averaged
180,000.
The week's most-watched Spanish-language prime-time program was the Monday episode of ``Soy tu Duena.' The Univision telenovela averaged 5.77 million viewers, which would have put it 22nd among the programs on the five major English-language networks.
NBC finished first among the network nightly newscasts for the 96th time in 97 weeks, averaging 7.42 million viewers. ABC was second, averaging 6.51 million viewers, while CBS tied its record low, averaging 4.89 million viewers to finish third for the 204th consecutive week.
