Three people were shot and wounded today in three separate but apparently related attacks in South Los Angeles, a Los Angeles police lieutenant said.
The shootings occurred over several blocks near 54th Street and Arlington Avenue about 12:15 a.m., said Los Angeles police Lt. Peter Casey of the 77th Street Station.
A woman shot in the head was fighting for her life, he said.
"One victim, a 40-year-old black woman, was driving in her car," Casey said. "She was shot in the head and was in extremely critical condition and may not survive."
Casey said that another victim, a 40-year-old black man, was shot while walking down the street.
"He was shot in the stomach and was in very serious condition. But after surgery, he was stabilized and his condition now looks better,' said Casey.
The third victim, a 29-year-old black man, was shot while walking on the street.
"He was hit in the arm and his wounds do not appear life-threatening.
"But I don't know what condition he is in," said Casey.
Evidence was collected over several blocks.
"We've been collecting shell casings, a lot of them, over several blocks,' he said.
The shooting appear to be related, he said.
"We're still putting it together but it appears it's the work of shooters in three different vehicles over several blocks,' Casey said. "But the only descriptions of the vehicles we have so far from witnesses is red, black and blue -- no make, models or plates, no descriptions of the suspects,
just car colors.'
Casey said the attacks may also be gang-related, but none of the victims had any ties to gangs.
"They were just innocent people,' he said.
Anyone with more information was asked to call the LAPD's 77th Street Station at (213) 485-4164.
