The historic clubhouse of the Beverly Hills Women's Club is transforming into a vintage couture fashion house for a high tea and fashion show event hosted by the club's junior members this Sunday.
“We wanted to do something that both mothers and daughters can enjoy,” said Victoria Gordon, 16.
Dawning cocktail dresses and evening gowns from the 1950s through the 1980s, the club's junior members will walk the runway in designer fashions from Beverly Hills' Paper Bag Princess.
“We will show 14 pieces during the show,” said Melissa Lyles, manager of Paper Bag Princess. “Most will be from the 1950s and 60s.”
All gowns were hand selected by the junior members beforehand.
“We wanted both colorful dresses and black dresses,” said 15-year-old Valerie Deutsch. “They also had to be summer dresses, or dresses you could wear for prom.”
Gordon added, “We wanted a mix of different styles from all time periods to make everyone look their best.”
The girls chose colors ranging from vibrant pinks to yellows, blues, reds and crème; prices are anywhere from $895 to $2,295, said Lyles.
Deutsch said she is modeling a hot pink dress, her favorite color, for the fashion show.
Paper Bag Princess will pair the fashions with Chanel accessories, and local jewelry designer Bonnie Star will adorn the girls in her collection.
“Star will be providing necklaces to match each dress,” said Gordon.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Ovarian Cancer Foundation, said Deutsch.
“My grandmother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in February and passed away within a few weeks, this is close to my heart,” said Gordon. “I want to do whatever I can to raise awareness and funds to find a cure so people do not have to suffer like my grandmother.”
In addition to the fashion show, throughout the year the junior members hold various fundraisers for a variety of non-profit organizations in Los Angeles.
Each fall they collect backpacks full of supplies to donate to homeless children living at the Salvation Army Westwood Transitional Village.
In October, the members collect costumes to donate to local hospitals for Halloween.
“It is nice to help people, and to raise awareness for good causes,” said Deutsch. “Sometimes you can make someone's day with a small act of kindness.”
The fashion show will be hosted from 3 to 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the door (1700 Chevy Chase Dr.) for $25; $10 for ages 12-17 and free for children under the age of 12.
The junior members are currently accepting applications.
