Sought-after personal make-up artist Kéla Wong helps her clients look their best. A make-up artist for 20 years and known in the fashion industry as Miss Wong, her brushes have touched the faces of such celebrities as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton, Alicia Keyes and Sandra Bullock.
Now, any woman may request Miss Wong’s services, and have her personally primp and pamper them in their own home, or have her travel alongside them to personal or professional destinations.
“I truly care how my clients look and feel,” Miss Wong said. “I want them to look drop-dead gorgeous, naturally sexy and effortless; where the end result will be a jaw-dropping beauty.”
Her work is featured regularly in magazines like Vanity Fair, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE and Cosmopolitan, she’s made up Victoria’s Secret and Playboy models and helped clients down red carpets— and now she’s available for weddings, social events, bat mitzvahs, debutante balls, dates or any place her clients want to look their best.
Miss Wong, who initially wanted to be a plastic surgeon, but learned she could not stand the sight of blood, studied hair styling in England at Vidal Sassoon, and then tried her hand at makeup.
Now, she’s always experimenting and keeping up on the latest trends, products and techniques. “When you stop learning it’s because you no longer have a passion for your craft,” Miss Wong says, “and I am incredibly fortunate to love what I do.”
Companies like Chanel ask Miss Wong to test and evaluate their products, long before they hit the stores; and magazines like InStyle and Cosmopolitan rely on her for favorite new picks and insights into the latest trends.
The look of the moment, Wong says, is a face that radiates a healthy glow, with dewy luminous skin and accenting a dominant feature, whether it be a sultry smokey eye, or a berry-stained lip, “More than one dominant feature can give the look of being overly made up.”
When she first meets with clients, Miss Wong usually asks what they feel are their favorite and least-favorite features. She takes into account, one’s personality, face and body shape and applies her knowledge of what the trends are. A typical session usually lasts an hour.
“But it’s not about looking trendy,” Miss Wong says. It’s about looking modern and up-to-date, otherwise your look can pigeonhole you to a certain era; and this can make a person look many years older.”
