An estimated 25,000 runners took part in the 25th Los Angeles Marathon-2010 that started at Dodger Stadium and ultimately continued through the Beverly Hills before finishing in the City of Santa Monica. 

The Beverly Hills Police and Fire Departments,  along with the support of City staff and volunteers, aided in a safe and successful experience for runners and spectators alike. 

Due to the large geographic area covered by the Marathon route and involvement of several municipal agencies and jurisdictions, a multi-agency approach to radio communications was critical.

 As such, Beverly Hills utilized the Interagency Communications Interoperability Communications (ICIS) interoperable and regional radio system, which proved invaluable in providing public safety and response personnel a useful and functional radio communications tool with which to coordinate response efforts over the 26-mile route. A notable addition to radio communications was the Logistics component of the Marathon "borrowed" an ICIS radio frequency in order to cover the entire event with a single communications tool that would support their operations.

From Chavez Ravine to the Santa Monica Pier, the  Beverly Hills and the Los Angeles Fire Department were able to communicate seamlessly and coordinate response efforts to maintain the safety of the participants and spectators along the Marathon route.

Radio contact points were located at the Los Angeles Marathon Incident Command Center and the City of Beverly Hills 9-1-1 Dispatch Center. ICIS radio channels were utilized for response and coordination between law enforcement, fire, local government and Marathon volunteers.  The overall benefit of the communications capabilities to cover this type of public event cannot be understated, particularly when it contributes to the successful outcome of an event of this scope, said the BHPD.
